Lara Croft come back from the brink. After The Angel of Darkness and the second film starring Angelina Jolie, she was almost dead and buried, both artistically as commercially. Yet the archaeologist who made fantasize an entire generation of players has experienced one of the best resurrections in the history of videogame. By entrusting the destiny of Lara Croft to Crystal Dynamics, Eidos has saved her license and has considerably revitalized. But the success of Legend and Anniversary is already behind us. Now comes the problem to begin a second decade of existence without letting players increasingly tired.

...among the Mayas, in the middle of Yucatan. That's where we had the opportunity to discover the eighth episode of Tomb Raider Underworld. But let us return to Mexico. Players are wise and curious about everything, you are not aware that Crystal Dynamics has no studios in the land of sombreros. So... why has this beautiful tour been offered to a few reporters? Because an entire passage of the next Tomb Raider revolves around Maya legends. And it is at the heart of Chiapas, a region in the south of Mexico, that we discovered the Lara version 2008. Wearing her outfit, the archaeologist parts in the search for an artifact in Mayan ruins lost in the depths of the jungle. Everything revolves around a local myth which is about the end of time around 2012, as well as an underground world where the sun would recover its forces overnight.
The main focus of this new game is, of course, next-gen. The term is used incorrectly and through for some time. But in this case, it seems perfectly suited to what will be the Tomb Raider Underworld. On the merits, there is no change compared to what is or what should be a game with Lara Croft. It is always the lead on different levels in search of lost objects. The 3D action, a little platform of fighting and a lot of exploration that highlight generous forms of a character. The appearance of next-gen uses a brand new graphics engine, aimed at maximizing the capabilities of new machines.
The forecast compared to the previous games is obvious. The level unveiled is probably what the series has produced most beautifully since its inception. Forests, ruins ... it is full of little details, animation and effects of shadow and light. The decoration, more realistic, is alive and captures to perfection the impression of never violeted tombs for centuries. Better, a tropical rain reinforces the atmosphere and adds its resultant effects of glare. According to Eric Lindstrom, main designer, this passage illustrates one of the highlights of this episode: it is no longer seeking Lara's treasures, but Lara against the rest of the world.

If our treasure hunter is still in forms, designers of Crystal Dynamics have put an end to some of breast delusions and remain in realism even if the physical of our heroine is still a gap compared to her exploits. Lara is more mature, more experienced than in Legend or Anniversary. Her gaze is harder, her movements more assured: she is no longer a beginner, but a seasoned adventurer.
She is almost thirty-years-old, and who has seen a lot. A rich woman who knows she will go through bad moments. But what is striking above all is her integration into the decoration. She is no longer a piece operating in ruins as a player on a blue background. Now, Lara is fully inserted in the environments in which she operates. A simple rain may bring heavy consequences: the water that flows onto the floor becomes into slippery surfaces. Similarly, each act of Lara will leave traces: the steps on a path, broken limbs of a tree, and obviously corpses after a fight. It is the counterpart of this confrontation with the environment. Our heroine can defend herself and act on the scene with a physics engine in a very significant improvement since Anniversary. Lara has an ever wider range of movements and interactions. According to Crystal Dynamics, if the player believes that Lara can perform an action, so she must be able to do it. A ledge seems accessible? No problem, the archaeologist is now fond of Free Climb, literally a climbing that allows her to climb almost everywhere.
She also improved her balance, and like an Olympic gymnast on the balance beam, she can play tightrope walkers or jump on surfaces ridiculously small. She also runs quicker gracefully in sprints. Among these new movements, our preference is without doubt her ability to climb onto a beam, or a baton planted in the wall. The great class! Everything in grace and fluidity! To crown it all, she is beautiful but still dangerous even when performing the stunts. As long as one of her hands is not doing or holding onto anything, she can still fight, while remaining tight or in precarious balance.
A lot of changes have been made in relation to Anniversary, even though admitted, this aspect of the presentation has left us on our hunger. Lara has a wider range of shots and she can improvise with pieces she picks up and transforms them into frightening weapons. A big branch collected on the ground, a torch or a large stone become all weapons that the archaeologist can use on one hand while continuing to operate one of its pistols fetishes with the other.

Bye Bye Karima
Lara changes alter ego
The pretty Karima Adebibe will no longer be the human embodiment of Lara Croft. She was the only one to represent the archaeologist for two episodes, but Eidos resumed the tradition to change Lara each episode. Undoubtedly, the pundits of the publisher are already in the search for an alternate with great casting sessions. ...Crystal Dynamics is staying relatively discreet for the moment. A priori, the opposition is ought to be very classical. And so, the first ennemies that we could see are belonging to the bestiary of Tomb Raider : Panthers, spiders, bats and other armed henchmen . However, the IA which animate this whole small world is about doing a huge leap from Anniversary. From now on, her opponents can get almost to the same places as her. Certainly, a felin will have difficulties to draw up on a column , but the time our heroine would be able to shoot on everything that moves since a protected corner or a cornice belongs to the past. Other interesting evolution, the ennemies can now interact between them. In the level that we've seen, the panthers that were invading the ruins weren't seeing the men's presence in poursuit of Lara. Before the beatiful comes to the contact, the beasts would have already started the fight against those thugs. A panthere won't react in the same way as a human or a snake. Each will use its skills in the best way trusting its own programation.
But as usual in Tomb Raider, it is not by her warrior feats that the video game icon is going to pass levels and fill the museums with relics. The exploration stays inside the game and has won in intensity. Obviously, with more powerful machines, the map is bigger , more verticals and twisted. However, no need to make the game uselessly harder. Lara has more moves to evolve in these huge decors but the suspicion of the gamer is as important as its capacity to use his controller. This approach regards the puzzles as well, the levers are going to be more raffined and amazing than in last TRs . Some will use the offered possiblities by the physical engine. Inside the Mayan temple of the demo, Lara finds herself in a dead-end while the weather was really rainy. Careful to all what's around here, our heroine notice that water seems to pour on the ground between two flagstones of a mosaic.

We did not see more about this eighth Tomb Raider. Crystal Dynamics has whispered a few bits of information about what to expect from this next-gen adventure. Thus, Lara should travel, and will not be confined to Mayan ruins only. But clues on vistas in addition to her full passport were not revealed. It is expected new destinations never before seen in the series. We are told that a small passage through the atantlean ruins be rumoured at the traditional underwater level. And also she is not always alone ... in certain specific occasions, she would receive the assistance of other characters, and not necessarily friends. What hope turning situation and alliances?
Tomb Raider Underworld is far from revealing all its secrets. Its intentions and its foundations are for the moment kept under wraps. Lara came out brilliantly in her convalescence. Now, better check if she is always the best, despite the passage of time.
